Teaching Matching and Classifying
What it is
Classifying means sorting a set by a rule, by color, by size, by shape, or by whether it is a living thing, and matching means pairing the items that go together. The same pile can usually be sorted more than one way.
When a child is ready
Begin once a pile of buttons or blocks can be put into groups and the child can say what makes each group.
If they struggle
If the groups drift halfway through, name the rule before starting and write it at the top of each group. Then sort the same pile again by a different rule, so the child sees that the rule decides the groups and the objects themselves have not changed.
