Teaching Skip Counting

What it is

Skip counting is counting forward by a number other than one (2, 4, 6, 8 or 5, 10, 15, 20). It prepares a child for multiplication and for counting money and minutes.

When a child is ready

Start with 10s and 5s once counting to 100 is secure, then 2s.

If they struggle

Point to a hundred chart while counting so the pattern is visible, and count real things in groups (pairs of shoes, nickels). Rhythm and clapping help the sequence stick.
