Teaching Color by Number

What it is

A color by number page hides a picture behind a key: every region marked 3 is colored red, every 5 blue. The numeral has to be read and found in the key before any coloring happens.

When a child is ready

Ready once the numerals used in the key are named on sight, without counting them out.

If they struggle

If the coloring turns into guessing, put the picture aside and drill the key alone: point to a numeral, name it, name its color. Then work one number at a time, finding every 3 on the page before starting the 5s, rather than region by region.
