Teaching Geometry and Shapes
What it is
Kindergarten geometry is naming and describing shapes: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle, and the solids, cube, sphere, cone, and cylinder. Children count sides and corners and find the same shapes in real objects around the house.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can match identical shapes and still sees a triangle as a triangle when it is turned.
If they struggle
If a triangle standing on its point is not recognized, turn a card triangle slowly while the child keeps naming it, so the name follows the shape rather than the position. For the solids, put a ball, a can, and a box on the table and sort them by what they will do, roll or stack or both, which is easier at this age than recalling sphere, cylinder, and cube.
