Teaching Data

What it is

Data work is the whole cycle: collecting information, organizing it in a tally chart or table, showing it in a graph, and answering questions from it. Early sheets count objects in a picture; later ones read a table and compare totals.

When a child is ready

A child is ready once a set can be counted accurately and the number written down without losing track.

If they struggle

When a chart is read wrongly, cover everything except the one row being read. Then ask the questions in order, how many in this row, which row has more, how many more, because the comparison questions collapse when the plain reading is shaky rather than when the subtraction is.
