Teaching 2D Shapes
What it is
Flat shapes are named by their parts: a rectangle has four sides and four square corners, a triangle has three of each, a hexagon has six sides. Children sort shapes, count sides and vertices, and draw them.
When a child is ready
Begin once circle, square, triangle, and rectangle are named on sight.
If they struggle
When a long thin rectangle or a square standing on its point goes unrecognized, count the sides and corners together and let the count settle the name. A name that changes when the page is turned around has not been learned yet, so keep turning the page and asking again until the answer stays the same.
