Teaching Mixed Operation Word Problems
What it is
Three short stories within 10 about joining and taking away. For each, the child draws the story, writes it as a number sentence, and gives the answer.
When a child is ready
Start once the child adds and takes away within 10 with objects.
If they struggle
Act the story out with counters before drawing it. Ask one question only: did the group get bigger or smaller? That decides plus or minus.
