What it is
These are short story problems with adding and subtracting mixed on the same page, so the child must decide which one the story calls for before touching the numbers. 'Four birds landed, then two flew away' and 'four birds landed, then two more came' use the same numbers and different operations.
When a child is ready
Use them once add-only and subtract-only story problems are each solved comfortably on their own.
If they struggle
Do not teach keyword hunting — 'altogether' turns up in subtraction problems soon enough. Have the child act the story out with counters or draw it, say whether the group ended up bigger or smaller, and write the number sentence from that.
