Teaching Classifying Shapes
What it is
Classifying at this level sorts figures by their properties rather than by name alone: parallel sides, equal sides, right angles. It is where a child sees that a square is also a rectangle and also a rhombus.
When a child is ready
Begin once right angles and parallel sides can be identified and the common quadrilaterals are named.
If they struggle
Work from a written checklist for each figure: four sides, two pairs of parallel sides, four right angles, all sides equal, and tick what is true. When a child insists a square is not a rectangle, run the rectangle checklist against the square and let the ticks answer, because arguing about the names will not shift it.
