Teaching Long Division

What it is

Eight long divisions by a one-digit number, most with a remainder, each checked by multiplying back and adding the remainder. The story problem asks what the remainder means.

When a child is ready

Ready once division facts are quick and the child multiplies and subtracts on paper.

If they struggle

Say the four steps aloud each time: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. In the story, decide whether the remainder needs one more boat or is simply left over.
