Teaching Division as Equal Groups

What it is

Division as equal groups is the first idea of division: share 12 crackers among 3 friends and count how many each one gets. There is no written algorithm yet.

When a child is ready

Introduce it after addition and subtraction within 20, with real objects.

If they struggle

Deal the objects out one at a time into equal piles, then count a pile. Let the child say the sentence: '12 shared by 3 is 4 each.'
