Teaching Division as Equal Groups

What it is

Division as equal groups and sharing builds toward division facts: 15 divided by 3 asks how many are in each of three equal groups, or how many groups of three are in 15.

When a child is ready

Teach it after multiplication as equal groups is understood, since division undoes it.

If they struggle

Connect every division fact to a multiplication fact the child knows: 15 ÷ 3 = 5 because 3 × 5 = 15. Arrays make the pair visible.
