Teaching Long Division
What it is
Long division is the written method for dividing larger numbers: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, repeat. It relies on multiplication facts and place value.
When a child is ready
The child needs quick multiplication facts, solid subtraction with regrouping, and place value before the algorithm is introduced.
If they struggle
Slow down to one-digit divisors and say the four steps out loud in order every time. Estimating first ('how many 4s fit in 27?') keeps the child thinking instead of just following steps.
