Teaching Order of Operations
What it is
Working inside the brackets first, and writing an expression for words like three times as large as eighteen plus four. The page reads expressions both ways: from symbols into words, and from words into symbols.
When a child is ready
Use it once the four operations are secure and multiplication takes priority over addition without prompting.
If they struggle
Underline what is inside the brackets and work that out on its own line before touching the rest. Reading the expression aloud usually exposes a misread.
