Teaching Geometry
What it is
Geometry across these grades runs from naming flat and solid shapes to counting sides, faces, and vertices, then classifying shapes by their properties and finding perimeter and area.
When a child is ready
A child is ready to move on once a shape is described by what it has, straight sides or square corners, rather than by what it resembles.
If they struggle
Find which layer is missing before reteaching the whole page. If shapes are misnamed, the work is naming. If they are named but the sides and corners cannot be counted, the work is attributes. If perimeter and area come out as the same number, the work is deciding what is being measured, the edge or the covering.
