Teaching Geometry

What it is

Polygons to name by counting sides, perimeter and area found by counting squares, and a rectangle to draw from a given length and width.

When a child is ready

Ready once the child counts squares in rows and knows shape names up to the hexagon.

If they struggle

For a rectangle drawn from its measurements, count the dots along the bottom first, then up the side, and close the shape.

This skill in other grades: Kindergarten · Grade 1 · Grade 3 · Grade 4 · Grade 5
