Teaching Pictographs
What it is
A pictograph uses one symbol to stand for several items, and the key says how many, so one book picture may mean five books. Half a symbol means half of that number.
When a child is ready
Begin once the key's number can be skip counted and a graph where one picture means one is read easily.
If they struggle
The key is where almost every error starts. Have the child read the key aloud and write its number at the top of the page, then multiply rather than counting symbols one at a time. For a half symbol, ask what half of the key number is and write that down before it is added in.
