Teaching Comparing and Ordering Decimals
What it is
Comparing decimals means deciding which is larger and putting several in order: compare the whole numbers first, then the tenths, then the hundredths. 0.4 is larger than 0.39, even though 39 is larger than 4.
When a child is ready
Begin once the decimal places can be named and the child can write 0.4 and 0.40 as the same amount.
If they struggle
The usual error is treating the longer decimal as the larger one. Have the child rewrite both with the same number of decimal places, 0.40 and 0.39, before comparing anything. A number line marked in tenths, with the hundredths ticked in between, settles the argument in a way that a rule will not.
