Teaching Decimals

What it is

Decimals are another way to write fractions with denominators of 10, 100, or 1,000: 0.5 is five tenths, 0.25 is twenty-five hundredths.

When a child is ready

Teach decimals after fractions and place value are understood, since a decimal is both.

If they struggle

Use money and a place-value chart that extends to the right of the ones. Say decimals by their place names ('three and four tenths') rather than 'three point four' until the value is clear.
