Teaching Multiplying Fractions
What it is
Multiplying fractions multiplies the top numbers together and the bottom numbers together, so 2/3 times 3/4 is 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2. Multiplying by a fraction smaller than one makes the amount smaller, which surprises most children.
When a child is ready
Begin once equivalent fractions and simplifying are secure and mixed numbers can be rewritten as improper fractions.
If they struggle
Read the times sign as of, half of a quarter, and draw it on one rectangle shaded in stripes across and then in stripes down; the overlap is the answer and it is visibly smaller than either piece. If answers keep coming back unsimplified, make simplifying the last written line of every problem so it is never treated as optional.
