Teaching Fractions

What it is

A fraction names equal parts of a whole: one half is one of two equal parts, one fourth is one of four. The bottom number says how many equal parts; the top says how many are counted.

When a child is ready

Introduce halves and fourths once the child understands equal sharing and can divide a shape fairly.

If they struggle

Fold paper and cut real food into equal parts before writing fractions. Insist on 'equal' every time; unequal parts are the root of most early fraction errors.
