Teaching Measurement Units
What it is
This is matching the unit and the tool to the task at this level: a tape measure in feet for a room, a scale in ounces for a letter, a graduated cup in milliliters for liquid, and choosing between customary and metric units.
When a child is ready
Begin once each tool can be used to measure and the common equivalences within a system are known.
If they struggle
When the wrong tool is chosen, name what each one actually reads: a ruler reads length only, a scale reads weight only, a measuring cup reads how much a container holds. Then ask which of the three the question wants. Keep the tools on the table and have the child pick one up for each question, because choosing on paper is much harder than choosing with the tool in hand.
