Teaching Reasoning & Fluency
What it is
Practice aimed at speed and at thinking, not at new content: timed fluency pages, missing-number problems, multi-step problems, spot-the-error pages, and mastery checks that mix the grade together.
When a child is ready
Ready when the grade's methods are accurate but slow, or when accuracy is fine and you want to know whether it will hold under a mixture.
If they struggle
Separate speed from understanding before doing anything else. If the errors appear only on timed pages, drop the timing for a week and rebuild accuracy. Spot-the-error pages are the useful diagnostic here: a child who cannot find someone else's mistake usually cannot yet find their own.
