Teaching Teen Number Place Value
What it is
Teen number place value is seeing 13 as one ten and three ones rather than as the two separate digits 1 and 3. It is the first place value idea a child meets.
When a child is ready
Ready after teen numbers have been built with ten frames or bundles and counting to twenty is secure.
If they struggle
Keep the ten as one object, a stick of ten cubes or a bundle held with a rubber band, not ten loose counters, so one ten can be picked up in one hand. Have the child say how many tens and how many ones out loud before the digits go on paper.
