Teaching Base Ten

What it is

Base ten work shows a number as tens and ones: 34 is three ten rods and four single cubes. These pages go both ways, counting the blocks that are shown and drawing blocks for a number that is given.

When a child is ready

Ready once the child counts by tens to a hundred and can gather loose objects into groups of ten.

If they struggle

If the child counts every single unit printed on the rods, count the rods aloud by tens, ten, twenty, thirty, then count the loose ones on from there. Trading ten loose ones for one rod by hand a few times is what gives the tens digit meaning.
