Teaching Comparing and Ordering Numbers
What it is
Comparing larger numbers means writing >, <, or = between them and putting a set in order from least to greatest. The grade 4 pages reach into the hundred thousands, such as 309,791 and 573,399.
When a child is ready
Ready once place value through thousands is secure and long numerals are read without losing track of the digits.
If they struggle
Write the pair one above the other with the ones digits lined up. A number with more digits is larger; otherwise compare from the left, place by place, and stop at the first place where the digits differ. Most errors here come from comparing digits that are not in the same place.
