Teaching Expanded and Standard Form

What it is

Expanded form writes a number as the sum of its place values (300 + 40 + 2); standard form is the usual way (342).

When a child is ready

Teach it once hundreds, tens, and ones are understood.

If they struggle

Use a place-value chart and write each digit in its column before writing the expanded form. Zeros are the usual trouble spot: 305 is 300 + 5, with no tens.
