Teaching Number Patterns
What it is
Number patterns are sequences with a rule, such as adding 3 each time (4, 7, 10, 13) or doubling. Finding the rule is early algebraic thinking.
When a child is ready
Teach it after skip counting and basic addition and subtraction are secure.
If they struggle
Ask the child to write the difference between each pair of numbers. Once the differences are visible, the rule usually is too. Then have the child extend the pattern and check it.
