Teaching Mixed Practice

What it is

These pages mix the ways multiplication is shown, arrays of equal rows and jumps along a number line, and finish with word problems where the child has to decide whether the story multiplies or divides.

When a child is ready

Ready once multiplication as equal groups is understood and the facts through the fives are known.

If they struggle

If arrays and number lines go well but the word problems do not, the arithmetic is not the trouble; choosing the operation is. Ask whether the story puts equal groups together or breaks a total into equal groups, and have the child write the number sentence before working it.
