Teaching Comparing and Estimating

What it is

These pages measure drawn items with a ruler or a scale, convert the measurements into one common unit such as sixteenths of an inch, and rank them shortest to longest or lightest to heaviest. The capacity pages do the same with containers.

When a child is ready

Ready once the child reads a ruler to the sixteenth of an inch and converts within one system, inches to feet or grams to kilograms.

If they struggle

The ranking goes wrong when the units are mixed, because 5/8 looks larger than 3/4 written down when it is not. Convert every measurement to the smallest unit on the page first, write the converted numbers in a column, and only then put them in order.
