Teaching Mixed Rounding
What it is
On these pages the place to round to changes from question to question and is shown by an underlined digit: 84,985 with the 8 underlined is rounded to the nearest ten thousand, giving 80,000.
When a child is ready
Use these once rounding to a named place is automatic at the tens, hundreds, and thousands separately.
If they struggle
Most errors here are reading errors, not arithmetic: the child rounds to the place used in the question before. Have them name the underlined digit's place out loud, circle the digit immediately to its right, and then decide. Cases that roll over, such as 4,962 to the nearest hundred giving 5,000, deserve their own practice.
