Teaching Integers

What it is

Integers are the whole numbers together with their negatives, the numbers behind temperatures below zero and money owed. These pages place them on a number line, compare them, and find absolute values, which is a number's distance from zero, so the absolute value of -8 is 8.

When a child is ready

Ready once the number line is familiar and the child compares and orders whole numbers without hesitating.

If they struggle

The sticking point is that -8 is less than -3, which feels backward. Draw the number line upright like a thermometer with zero in the middle, so further down is colder and smaller. For absolute value, read the bars as how far from zero, and work the inside first, so the absolute value of 2 + 7 is the absolute value of 9, which is 9.
