Teaching Place Value: Missing Digits
What it is
These pages give a four-digit number broken into its parts with one part blank, such as 6,000 + __ + 70 + 7 = 6,177. The parts come in mixed order, and some of the numbers have a zero in one place.
When a child is ready
Ready once four-digit numbers are read and the places are named in order from the right.
If they struggle
Write the total in a place value chart and match each printed part to its column; the column with nothing against it is the answer. Watch the zeros: in 3,080 the hundreds and ones contribute nothing, so a part of 0 may already be printed and the blank is somewhere else.
