Teaching Numerals 4 and 5
What it is
Reading and writing the figures 4 and 5 and joining each one to a group of that many things.
When a child is ready
Teach these once 0 through 3 are known on sight and the child counts five objects accurately.
If they struggle
A backward 5 is the usual error. Give one starting dot and one spoken direction for each figure, have the child say the number while writing it, and finish by setting the written numeral next to a card with that many dots.
