What should 5th grade grammar and writing practice cover?

A fifth grader on the ordinary path has already met every rule on these four pages. The work now is fluency and self-correction: writing at length without the mechanics slipping, and catching his own errors before a parent does. Both are habits, and habits are built by short, regular, unremarkable practice.

That is what the copywork set provides. Thirty-six sheets is roughly one a week across a school year, or a short daily block if you spread each sheet over several days. Ask for the finished copy to be checked line by line against the model; at this age that check is worth more than the copying itself.

The Edit and Repair page is the one to keep in reach all year. A fifth grader is old enough to be handed the responsibility outright: nothing he writes comes to you unread by him first. That single rule does more for his mechanics than another worksheet would, and the page gives him the checks to run.

Where a fifth grader is genuinely behind, do not stay at this grade out of loyalty to the label. Kindergarten here holds 38 sentence sheets and 10 sentence-writing sheets, and 1st and 3rd Grade each hold their own 36-sheet copywork set. The grade on the label is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Use the level where the child can work accurately, and move up when the accuracy holds.
