Teaching Sentence Building
What it is
Sentence building is putting words together into a complete sentence: a naming part and a telling part, in an order that makes sense. Early on that means arranging scrambled words; later it means joining two short sentences into one and adding detail without losing the thought.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can read the words being arranged and knows that a sentence tells a whole thought.
If they struggle
Cut the words apart and let the child move them physically until the sentence sounds right, then copy it out. Find the naming part first, who or what the sentence is about, and start there. When a sentence stays incomplete, ask what that person or thing is doing; the missing piece is nearly always the telling part.
