What it is
This is matching the written figures 0, 1, 2, and 3 to the amounts they stand for and telling them apart by shape. Zero is included because none is a number too.
When a child is ready
Start once the child counts three objects correctly and can say how many are left when all of them are taken away.
If they struggle
If 2 and 3 blur together, build each figure out of playdough or trace it in a tray of salt while saying its name. Then lay the numeral card beside a matching pile of counters so the figure never appears without its amount.
