Teaching Numeral Formation

What it is

Numeral formation is writing the figures 0 through 9 with a consistent starting point and stroke order, so writing stays quick and readable once numbers grow to two and three digits.

When a child is ready

Ready when the child holds a pencil comfortably and can trace straight lines and curves.

If they struggle

Reversed 3, 5, 7, and 9 are ordinary at first. Give a starting dot and one short spoken direction for each figure, write it large in the air or in sand before it goes on paper, and correct the stroke as it happens rather than after the page is finished.
