Teaching Counting and Cardinality
What it is
Cardinality is knowing that the last number said in a count tells how many there are altogether. A child who counts five bears and answers five when asked how many has it; a child who counts them again does not yet.
When a child is ready
Ready as soon as the child touch-counts a small group without skipping or repeating.
If they struggle
Count a group together, then cover it and ask how many are hidden. Count the same group again starting from the other end so the child sees the total does not change with the order. Ask how many after every count, so the question becomes part of counting.
