Teaching Counting 8 to 10
What it is
Counting eight, nine, and ten objects and matching each amount to its written numeral. Ten matters most of the three, because every later number is built from tens.
When a child is ready
Ready once six and seven are counted accurately and the numerals to seven are named on sight.
If they struggle
Long counts fall apart near the end. Fill a ten frame left to right, top row first, so eight is a full top row and three more and ten is a full frame. Counting the same set on fingers and then checking it against the frame gives two views of one amount.
