Teaching Counting 6 and 7
What it is
Counting six and seven objects. At these sizes the amount can no longer be seen at a glance, so keeping track of what has already been counted starts to matter.
When a child is ready
Ready once five is counted accurately and the numerals to five are named on sight.
If they struggle
Skipping an item or counting one twice is the usual error, so have the child move each object to a new pile as it is counted. Six and seven also build well from five: five and one more, five and two more.
