Teaching Counting 16 to 20
What it is
Counting sixteen through twenty and reading those numerals. Sixteen to nineteen follow the teen pattern; twenty begins the next set of ten and is written with a zero in the ones place.
When a child is ready
Ready when counting to fifteen is reliable and a teen number can be built as a ten and some ones.
If they struggle
Writing 61 for sixteen is the classic trap, because the word says six first. Build the number with a ten stick and six ones and write the tens digit before the ones digit every time. Count large sets into two ten frames so the first ten is finished and set aside.
