Teaching Counting 11 to 15
What it is
Counting past ten to fifteen, where the number words stop being helpful. Eleven and twelve give no clue at all, and thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen say the ones part before the ten.
When a child is ready
Ready once ten objects are counted accurately and the numerals to ten are recognized.
If they struggle
Eleven and twelve have to be learned as names, so drill just those two. For thirteen through fifteen, build the number as one filled ten frame plus loose counters and say ten and three, thirteen, so the word and the amount arrive together.
