Teaching Comparing Numbers Within 10
What it is
Deciding which of two numbers up to ten is greater or less, now using the numbers themselves rather than matching objects one to one. Seven is more than four because seven comes later in the count.
When a child is ready
Ready when the child counts to ten accurately and has already compared two groups of objects by lining them up.
If they struggle
If the written numerals mean nothing yet, build each number on its own ten frame and see which one holds more. A number path on the table settles it too: the number further along is the greater one, and the child can walk a finger from one to the other.
