Teaching Comparing and Ordering Teen Numbers
What it is
Deciding which teen number is greater, naming one more and one less, and putting 11 through 19 in order. Because every teen number holds one ten, only the ones digit decides.
When a child is ready
Ready after teen numbers have been built as a ten and some ones and counting to twenty is accurate.
If they struggle
If the child guesses, build both numbers on ten frames and compare only the loose counters. For one more and one less, keep a numeral strip from 10 to 20 in view and step one square right or left before writing the answer.
