Teaching Building Teen Numbers
What it is
A teen number is one ten and some ones: fourteen is one ten and four ones. Building it with a filled ten frame plus loose counters shows why 14 is written with a 1 and a 4.
When a child is ready
Ready when the child counts to twenty and can fill a ten frame and say that it holds ten.
If they struggle
If the child reads the 1 in 14 as one, cover the 4 and point to the ten frame that the 1 stands for. Build several teen numbers in a row, ten and five, ten and six, ten and seven, so only the ones part is seen to change.
