Teaching Ways to Make 6 to 10
What it is
The same partner pairs, now for 6 through 10: 6 is 5 and 1 or 4 and 2, and 10 is 7 and 3 or 6 and 4. These pairs are what later mental addition and subtraction are built on.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the pairs for 5 are known without counting.
If they struggle
Work on one number at a time rather than all five at once, and use a ten frame so the child sees 8 as a full row of five plus three. When a pair is missed, uncover it with counters instead of saying the answer.
