Teaching Number Path Movement
What it is
A number path is a row of numbered squares the child moves along: hop forward to add, hop backward to subtract. For 5 + 3 the child puts a finger on 5 and takes three hops to land on 8.
When a child is ready
Use it once the child reads written numerals to 10 or 20 and counts forward and backward in order.
If they struggle
The usual error is counting the starting square as the first hop, which gives an answer one too small. Have the child say the starting number, keep a finger on it, and count only the hops out loud: 'five — six, seven, eight.'
