Teaching Addition Facts
What it is
Addition facts are the sums of single-digit numbers (3 + 4, 8 + 5). Knowing them from memory frees the child to think about bigger problems.
When a child is ready
A child is ready for fact practice after adding with objects and counting on from a number is understood.
If they struggle
Practice in small groups by strategy (doubles, plus one, making ten) rather than the whole table at once. A few minutes daily, always accurate before fast.
