Teaching Ways to Make 5
What it is
This is every pair that adds to 5: 0 and 5, 1 and 4, 2 and 3, and the same pairs reversed. Knowing them means the child answers 3 + 2 without counting.
When a child is ready
Teach it once splitting five objects into two groups is easy, so the work is remembering the pairs rather than finding them.
If they struggle
Line up five counters and slide them apart one at a time, recording each pair in order: 0 and 5, 1 and 4, 2 and 3. The ordered list makes the pattern visible and shows at a glance which pair is still missing.
