Teaching Time and Sequence
What it is
Time at this stage is order rather than clocks: what happens first, next, and last, and which activities belong to morning, afternoon, and night. Children put three or four picture cards of a routine or a story into the right order.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can retell a familiar routine, such as getting dressed or making toast, in the order it happens.
If they struggle
When the cards get shuffled, put them down and talk through the child's own day instead: what do you do right after breakfast, and what comes after that. Then return to the cards and have the child say first, next, last aloud while touching each one, since the words are what hold the order in place.
